Over 200 attendees celebrated the transformational change initiated in Costa Rica’s coffee sector by way of the first agricultural NAMA in the world at the NAMA Support Project’s closing event on October 18th, 2019.
An important focus of our work has been the support of coffee farmers to adapt to the impact of climate change. Diego Loría, a technical advisor at ICAFE, has already noticed that the number of shade tree species and disease-resistant coffee varieties has increased considerably in coffee plantations. But for him, the most striking thing is the change of mentality of the traditional producers: “They already identify more with the Good Agricultural Practices we promote - the important thing is that the producer himself recognizes their importance.”

Representatives of coffee mills participated in the business conference "Promoting Low-Carbon, Energy-Efficient and Environmentally Sustainable Coffee" organized on behalf of ICAFE, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and German Development Cooperation GIZ.
After over three years of implementation, Sandra Spies, project director of the NAMA Support Project on behalf of GIZ, and Carlos Fonseca, technical manager at ICAFE, take a step back to analyse and discuss the successes and challenges that have come with the project, and how it could serve as a model for other countries and sectors.
