In 2017, the Coffee NAMA not only continued working with coffee mills on the measurement of carbon and water footprints, but also focused on another target group: coffee producers. In approx. 30 workshops that took place throughout the country, more than 3,000 producers were trained in the application of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adapt to climate change, without reducing the productivity of their farms.
Several agricultural advisors from ICAFE, MAG and several coffee mills, as well as coffee producers from different areas of the country explain the impact that the project has had on their daily work.
Under the motto of "TASTE Costa Rica", coffee mills from all over Costa Rica presented their low carbon coffee at this year´s edition of SINTERCAFE Coffee Week.
The event was organized by ICAFE and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
The coffee mills CoopeAgri, CoopeVictoria, Coopronaranjo, Jardin de Aromas and ZALMARI participating in the Coffee NAMA were selected to participate in the 2017 Business Tour in Germany, where they will present their low-carbon coffee to German roasters.
Coffee is one of Costa Rica's main exports but coffee production contributes to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Efforts are underway to make it less environmentally damaging. The Deutsche Welle accompanied us on a visit to two coffee farms in the NAMA Café in order to learn their efforts to reduce GHG emissions.
On July 18th 2017, producers from Orosi participated in the second Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) workshop dealing with nutrition and fertilization, weed management, plagues and illnesses and agroforesty systems.
The workshop took place at the ZALMARI S.A. coffee mill´s farm and was organized by the Ministry for Agriculture, the National Coffee Institute and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
