An important focus of our work has been the support of coffee farmers to adapt to the impact of climate change. Diego Loría, a technical advisor at ICAFE, has already noticed that the number of shade tree species and disease-resistant coffee varieties has increased considerably in coffee plantations. But for him, the most striking thing is the change of mentality of the traditional producers: “They already identify more with the Good Agricultural Practices we promote - the important thing is that the producer himself recognizes their importance.”
50 coffee mills initiate carbon and water footprint measuring in 2017
In 2017, the 50 coffee mills participating in the Costa Rican Coffee NAMA will receive trainings in calculating their respective carbon and water footprints. On October 19 th 2016, representatives from the Costa Rican Ministries for Environment and Energy (MINAE) and Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), as well as the National Coffee Institute (ICAFE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH officially launched the NAMA Support Project “Low-Carbon Coffee Costa Rica” (NSP).
