Coffee is one of Costa Rica’s most important and emblematic export good and deeply connected to the country’s national identity. However, climate change clearly challenges the livelihood of Costa Rican coffee farmers and the crop’s long-term sustainability. Faced with this dire situation, in 2014 the sector joined forces with public institutions and the international cooperation to implement the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) Café. Visitors of the 2018 Expo Feria Alemana had the opportunity to taste the world´s first low-carbon coffee and buy it from the mills Río Conejo and Santa Elena at GIZ´s booth at the fair. German member of Parliament and president of the Comitee for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid, Gyde Jensen, got to know the Coffee NAMA last Thursday during a visit at the ICAFE facilities. During the 31 st edition of Sintercafé International Coffee Week, over 20 coffee mills participating in the NAMA Café presented their coffee to international roasters at the side event TASTE Costa Rica. The event was organized by ICAFE and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Sintercafé is the biggest coffee event in Costa Rica, with about 500 visitors during the three days it takes place. Between October 2nd and 8th 2017, five coffee mills of the NAMA Café visited 12 coffee roasters and importers in Hamburg, Bremen and Dortmund, Germany, in order to establish business relationships with the country's coffee sector and to place their low carbon coffee on the German market. Successful presentation of low-emission coffee from Costa Rica at Expo Feria Alemana
5 coffee mills had the opportunity to offer their low-emission coffee at the annual Expo Feria Alemana from August 5 th to 6 th 2017 at the Parque Viva.
