Coffee mills advance with packaging design for their low-carbon coffee

During a second Design Thinking workshop held in early July, representatives of 8 coffee mills further defined the characteristics of the new packaging currently being designed to promote and sell the low-carbon and sustainable coffee of mills participating in the NAMA Café at an international level. Coffee mills improve marketing skills to promote their coffee abroad

During the months of May and June, the representatives of 10 coffee mills in the NAMA Café participated in a workshop dedicated to improve marketing and sales capacities, preparing presentations for the successful promotion of their coffee abroad. The 5 best presentations have been chosen to participate in a tour to Germany in September 2017 with the aim of seizing the opportunity to present their coffee to German coffee roasters. The course was organized by the ICAFE and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

Vice Minister for Agriculture Ivannia Quesada mentions NAMA Café as good example in front of FAO

On July 3rd 2017, Vice Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Ivannia Quesada, addressed the Plenary of the 40th Session of the General Conference of the FAO to present the efforts made and the vision for future work in the Costa Rican agricultural sector in order to combat the effects of Climate Change – among them highlighting the successful work of the NAMA Café.

CASCADE project offers training materials to facilitate adaptation to Climate Change to Costa Rican coffee producers

The CASCADE project, implemented by CATIE and Conservation International (CI), supports the development of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) for smallholder farmers in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras. A set of training materials was developed within the framework of the project, providing basic information on Climate Change and its impacts on the agricultural sector, and presenting strategies to adapt to Climate Change while maximizing the provision of ecosystem services on farms. The materials are freely accessible on line.

During the fair from June 13th to 15th organized by the Specialty Coffee Association Europe (SCAE) coffee from several mills participating the NAMA Café aroused the interest of small coffee buyers, roasters and baristas.

During her visit to Costa Rica from June 15th to 19th 2017, apart from meeting President Luis Guillermo Solís and numerous ministers of relevant ministries, the German Minister of Environment Barbara Hendricks also visited the NAMA Café and its NAMA Support Project “Low-Carbon Coffee”.

34 advanced coffee mills measure their water footprint

The 34 advanced coffee mills were trained in measuring their water footprints in workshops organized by the Ministry for Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), Ministry for Environment and Energy (MINAE), the National Coffee Institute (ICAFE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

16 new coffee mills of the NAMA Café learn to perform greenhouse gas inventories

Throughout the months of March and April, the 16 new coffee mills participating in the NAMA Café were trained in performing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in workshops organized by the Ministry for Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), Ministry for Environment and Energy (MINAE), the National Coffee Institute (ICAFE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Together with the 34 advanced mills, all 50 will hand in their final carbon footprints this year. 

57 technicians and extension workers trained in the NAMA Café´s basic concepts

In two workshops held in March and April 2017, technical personnel from the Ministry for Agriculture (MAG), the National Coffee Institute (ICAFE), and companies offering advisory services to coffee producers were introduced to the NAMA Café and its NAMA Support Project. In addition, they were presented with this year´s strategy of working closely with coffee farmers. Both activities were organized by the MAG, the ICAFE and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. 

Over 1,200 Costa Rican coffee farmers trained in Good Agricultural Practices

Coffee producers from all over Costa Rica received trainings on the topics of farm management, tree pruning, and sustainable soil management in order to increase productivity and minimize the impacts of climate change. In addition, they were presented with the NAMA Café and its NAMA Support Project. Over 500 people were trained directly in 9 workshops organized by the Ministry for Agriculture (MAG), the National Coffee Institute (ICAFE) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and carried out by consultants from CIMS. Over 700 producers were subsequently trained on the workshops´ topics by their technicians.
